Green Energy Parks’ (GEP) Peterborough scheme received pre-accreditation approval for the renewable energy it will generate under the current ROCs bandings for Gasification and Pyrolysis, at a level of 2 ROCs per megawatt hour of electricity produced.

After several months of rigorous research and development, the GEP team received Ofgem verification that the EnergyPark’s Fuels Measurement and Sampling procedure (FMS) is both robust and reliable.

Speaking today, GEP’s Managing Director, Chris Williams said:

“This is a significant achievement in the UK’s transition to a low carbon economy and moving closer to solutions that provide reliable, green energy for years to come.

“EnergyPark Peterborough will sustainably divert 750,000 tonnes of waste from landfill per year, at the same time as generating thousands of megawatt hours of renewable energy.  In the UK we produce 280 million tonnes of rubbish per year – we have to act now to tackle this.”

A revised constitution and standing orders documents are in progress to secure a safety net for the SRC members when the charity fund is ready for the community to apply for.

We have been shown the vision for PREL’s new Greenhouses and Bio Diversity Plant / Energy Park and it is fair to say all on the committee were impressed, an exciting project which will bring to Peterborough a pride with something as innovative and forward thinking as this.

The plans for environmental management system / health and safety are being written and will take some time to complete.

The committee are setting in place the procedures to run the trusts plans for the community fund, and will be ready for when the time comes to implement them.

It has been an interesting year, some stops and starts, but overall we the committee are excited about the project for the future of Peterborough and it’s residents.

GREEN ENERGY PARKS & PETERBOROUGH UNITED LAUNCH GLOBAL COMPETITION TO SUPPORT CHARITIES 

Green Energy Parks is delighted to announce the launch of the “Going the Extra Mile” competition, in conjunction with Peterborough United FC, to raise vital funds for three local charities. The competition challenges fans to photograph themselves in their EnergyPark Peterborough shirts in tourist spots around the world to raise money for The Posh’s charities – the East Anglian Air Ambulance, the East Anglia Children’s Hospices and the Peterborough United Foundation.  Competition is already fierce, with photographs sent in from as far afield as Detroit, Cape Verde, and the Maldives.

The best photos and a league table of most miles travelled will be published in each home match programme. Local businesses and individuals are encouraged to pledge donations to the competition pot, so that the charities can benefit as much as possible.  All donations will be acknowledged in match programmes.

At the end of the season, the mileage of the people who have travelled the furthest in any of the four shirts will be converted into cash and donated to the three charities. The overall winner will see money donated to these great charities and will also win a pair of executive seats for the last Championship home game of the season, against Watford on the 21^st April 2012.

The Peterborough Evening Telegraph today publishes a front page feature on Green Energy Parks’ (GEP) EnergyPark Peterborough project, which showcases the company’s proposals to use heat and gases created through renewable energy generation to create the UK’s largest greenhouses.

Using waste heat from thermal treatment processes is one of the biggest challenges facing the waste management sector at present, and this venture is another example of how GEP continues to lead the way in sustainable development in this country.

The plans for the greenhouses, which will create up to 1,500 jobs, have been welcomed by Peterborough City Council.

The ground-breaking EnergyPark Peterborough project, which was granted consent by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in November 2009, will be the first sustainable biomass-from-waste powerstation of its kind in Europe.  Drawing upon a mix of best available technologies, PREL will achieve maximum diversion of waste from landfill, creating renewable energy and recycled products at the same time.  Tetronics’ plasma-enhanced waste recovery systems will play a vital role in achieving that sustainable cycle and ensuring that the greatest value is taken from the waste input.

Following the gasification of a clean biomass fuel, the hazardous Air Pollution Control (APC) residues, which would traditionally be sent to landfill, will instead be collected and safely transferred to the co-located plasma unit. Tetronics’ plasma technology will then separate and destroy all the hazardous components in the residue, generating a totally safe inert product, similar to granite. This non-hazardous product called Plasmarok® can then be re-used as a glass or building aggregate in a range of applications, achieving close to zero residues remaining.

Commenting on the deal, CEO of Tetronics, Stephen Davies, added:

English soccer club signs Posh deal with Energypark firm

English League One soccer club Peterborough United have signed a new shirt sponsorship deal with Peterborough Renewable Energy Limited (PREL).

Promotion-chasing Posh have signed a two-season agreement, valued at US$300,000 per annum, which will see PREL’s Energypark logo emblazoned across the front of the club’s three shirts.

The deal will apply throughout the 2011/12 and 2012/13 English soccer seasons.

Bob Symns, chief executive of Peterborough United, said: “This is an excellent partnership for both the football club and our new partners PREL, and is the result of many months of protracted discussions and meetings by our commercial department. Cranfield University and Peterborough City Council signed the contract on Friday to develop education and research in renewable energy and bio-fuels.

The partnership includes a £60,000 donation from Peterborough Renewable Energy Ltd (PREL) and will involve the appointment of a Professor of Renewable Energy to create a Centre for Renewable Energy and Bio-Fuels to be built as part of the South Bank redevelopment in Peterborough.

The centre will run postgraduate degree programmes, short courses and research projects as well as support city employers working to develop renewable energy, bio-fuels and environmental innovation.

Cllr John Holdich, the council’s cabinet member for education and university, said: “This partnership is a real coup as it will put the city at the forefront of innovation in environmental technology.”

The event has fast become the leading exhibition for the sector, attracting visitors from recycling and waste management companies, retail and construction industries plus senior local authority decision makers.

Speaking at the event PREL Project Manager, Helen Rome, said:

“This year has been another hugely successful RWM exhibition and we are pleased to have been a part of it.

Despite the city council having opposed a previous scheme drawn up by Peterborough Renewable Energy Ltd (PREL), planning officers now say the £250 million state-of-the-art energy park, which would be built on a site off Storeys Bar Road, would bring a number of “positive benefits” to the city if plans get the go-ahead.

And in a report to be considered at a hastily-called extraordinary general meeting of the city council on Tuesday, planners have raised just a handful of concerns which they say must be satisfied for the scheme to secure their support when it is considered by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) later this year.

They say the proposed energy-recovery incinerator at the heart of the project would “eliminate” the need for landfill and have a “positive role” in respect to climate change.

“The Energy Park has the capacity to deliver long and short-term employment, training and educational benefits to the Central and East Peterborough Neighbourhood Investment Areas,” the report says.

“Overall, if the proposed development was implemented, this would bring positive benefits for Peterborough.”

It is expected, however, that councillors will still object to the scheme on the grounds that the proposals “lack” the information necessary to make a “positive” recommendation at this stage.

These include a detailed plan on highway and access issues, safety concerns regarding the proximity to gas pipelines, and justification on developing the site in the countryside.

However, the recommendation to councillors is to submit a holding objection which could be overturned if “some fundamental information is submitted prior to determination of the application”.

The proposed facility would be capable of processing or recycling up to 650,000 tonnes of commercial, agricultural and other waste, biomass and bio-crops, and would generate 66 megawatts of electricity annually.

Managing director of PREL Chris Williams said he was confident the necessary amendments and clarifications would be made to satisfy concerns.

He said: “We do not believe that any of the problems identified cannot be overcome quickly and easily, and we are confident that, with the support of our city councillors, we can make Peterborough’s dream happen.”

Leader of the city council John Peach said he was unable to comment on whether councillors were for or against the proposals until after the meeting.

However, he said that no matter what decision was made, the council’s £38 million plans for an incinerator of its own – just 400 yards away from the PREL site – would still go ahead.

The council says it needs to find new ways of disposing of waste to avoid the threat of massive fines imposed for using landfill sites.

Speaking slots to be allocated at town hall meeting

People who have previously made comments on the proposed energy park will have an opportunity to speak at the meeting on Tuesday, 13 January at Peterborough Town Hall.

The debate starts at 7pm, includes opportunities for a limited number of people to speak for up to two minutes each.

Speaking slots will be allocated on a “first-come” basis, and people must apply by calling Carol Tilley on 01733 452344, or e-mailing carol.tilley@peterborough. gov.uk by 4pm on 12 January.

There will also be a 40-minute slot for the applicants and any supporters to speak.

Comments expressed during the debate will be submitted to a meeting of the city council’s cabinet on 2 February, prior to a final recommendation being made to the Department for Energy and Climate Change.
